"NATIVE” WAYNE JOBSON
Born in Jamaica , Wayne grew up in the hills of the St.
Ann ’s parish, about nine miles from Nine Mile, the
birthplace of Bob Marley. His cousin, Diki Jobson,
started Island Records with Chris Blackwell and managed
Bob Marley and the Wailers. Another cousin, Diane
Jobson, was Bob Marley’s lawyer. Wayne spent time
jamming with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh who inspired him
to get into the music business.
After high school in Jamaica , he attended the Kings
college at the University of London where he obtained
his masters in entertainment law. While in London ,
Wayne played with and produced many musicians including
Johnny Rotten’s band Public Image. He was signed to
Clive Davis’ Arista Records and went on to do albums
with his band Native for RCA, A&M and MCA Records.
Native toured America for many years and played at the
US Festival in California with David Bowie which was
attended by over 300,000 people.
Wayne has recorded with a wide array of artists
including Jimmy Cliff, Willie Nelson, Toots and the
Maytals, Garth Brooks, Maxi Priest, 311, Third World,
Chrissie Hynde and Keith Richards. He has written songs
for many artists including Jimmy Buffet, Junior Reid and
Willie Nelson.
He wrote and produced the Peter Tosh movie “Stepping
Razor-Red X” which was nominated for a Canadian Academy
(Genie) Award. MTV brought in Wayne to produce “Behind
the Music – Peter Tosh”, “Bob Marley’s Legend – Ultimate
Album”, and “Behind the Music – Bob Marley” which was
nominated for an Emmy Award.
He produced two reggae compilation albums for Universal
which sold over half a million copies and were # 1 on
the Billboard Reggae chart for over four months.
Wayne hosted the biggest reggae show in America for over
7 years on Kroq, before becoming Program Director for 3
years and sharing in the launch of XM Satellite Radio –
America’s first nationwide radio station.
Wayne has won two Grammy Awards as Executive Producer of
the multi-platinum band, No Doubt, on the songs – “Hey
Baby” and “Underneath It All”, both of which were # 1 in
America. |
